Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Honored at Himalaya Darpan’s 23rd Anniversary

In a significant recognition of his contributions, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang was awarded the prestigious Gorkha Gaurav Samman during the 23rd anniversary celebrations of Nepali newspaper Himalaya Darpan. In his acceptance speech, Tamang addressed pressing issues impacting the Gorkha community and the broader socio-political environment.

Tamang highlighted the achievement of resolving the long-standing Limboo-Tamang tribal status issue through collective efforts. "Despite our differing political contexts, some issues are common. The persistent Limboo-Tamang tribal issue was resolved through concerted efforts," he stated. He also honored late former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari for his role in the inclusion of the Nepali language in the Indian Constitution.

Reflecting on key milestones, Tamang pointed to the 2003 designation of Limboo and Tamang communities as Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Sikkim and West Bengal, marking it as a significant achievement. He advocated for extending similar recognition to other communities, emphasizing ongoing efforts to secure ST status for 11 communities in Darjeeling and 12 in Sikkim through discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Expressing humility upon receiving the Gorkha Gaurav Samman, Tamang credited Himalaya Darpan and the people of Sikkim, saying, "I feel undeserving of this honor, yet deeply grateful." He highlighted his administration’s health initiatives, underscoring reduced medical costs and the Ama Yojana program, which offers financial support to mothers.

Tamang also commended Himalaya Darpan for its unwavering focus on Nepali issues and literature since its inception. He praised the newspaper’s role in preserving cultural heritage in the digital age and expressed appreciation for a special edition dedicated to Sikkim, acknowledging the publication’s ongoing contribution to cultural preservation.

In wrapping up his address, Tamang reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of the Gorkha community and regional unity, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in overcoming shared challenges.
