Unveiled Miracles: Camera Traps Expose the Enchanting Secret Cat World of Arunachal Pradesh
A recent study utilizing camera traps for the first time in Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS), Arunachal Pradesh, has provided valuable insights into the habitat preferences, activity patterns, and threats faced by the small cat populations in the area. Conducted as part of the Wildlife Institute of India’s research on mammalian species, the study documented leopard cats and marbled cats, indicating a strong preference for dense, undisturbed forests. This highlights the critical importance of preserving such habitats for their survival.
Terrestrial mammals, including these small cats, represent a rich and functionally diverse component of tropical forests but face threats like hunting, habitat loss, and fragmentation. Mehao WLS, established in 1980, supports a variety of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, and clouded leopards. The sanctuary is bordered by several Idu Mishmi villages, a community with strong taboos against hunting many wildlife species, playing a crucial role in conservation.
Despite the challenging terrain and climatic conditions, which complicate research efforts, the study managed to document 27 mammal species, 12 of which are listed as threatened by the IUCN. Authors Arif Ahmad and G.V. Gopi found that the elusive and nocturnal nature of some species, along with anthropogenic pressures like habitat fragmentation and human disturbance, affects their detectability and poses local threats.
The study stresses the need for continued monitoring and targeted conservation strategies to protect these cats. Additionally, it suggests leveraging the social taboos of the Idu Mishmi community to engage them in conservation projects, ensuring the long-term survival of these species. Challenges such as heavy snowfall, rainfall, and difficult terrain highlight the necessity for long-term studies to design effective conservation initiatives.
While the study did not capture tigers on camera, their presence is felt in the region, with local reports of tigers preying on domestic cattle. This underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to protect the diverse mammalian species in Mehao WLS.
