Outrage as Pakistan Cricket Board Strips Daily Allowances from Women Cricketers at National Camps
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sparked controversy by discontinuing daily allowances for women cricketers in national camps, a decision that has led to widespread disappointment among the athletes. This policy switch has predominantly affected players currently training in Multan for the upcoming home series against South Africa. According to a PCB representative, the new policy aims to offset the cost of daily allowances with provisions of accommodation and three meals per day. “The players are not being given daily allowances because the board is now providing them with accommodation and three full meals during the day,” the official explained.
However, the women cricketers view this change as unjust, particularly for those who have traveled from various regions across the country, incurring additional expenses. The South African women’s team is already in Multan, preparing for the white-ball series commencing on September 17, which is crucial for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. Despite the significance of this training camp, the players are grappling with the board’s new policy, exposing a glaring gender inequality within Pakistan cricket.
Notably, male cricketers in Pakistan continue to receive daily allowances along with two meals and accommodation, highlighting a stark disparity and raising questions about the PCB’s commitment to gender equality. A source close to the situation revealed that daily allowances were a regular practice for women cricketers until very recently, making this sudden change all the more jarring.
This decision comes as the PCB invests heavily in other areas, including a reported 5 million rupees monthly expenditure on salaries for mentors of teams in the Champions Cup in Faisalabad. The contrast between these substantial investments and the cuts impacting women cricketers have drawn significant criticism, underscoring broader gender disparity issues within the sport.
