Shocking Poll: Only 24% of Americans Back War with Iran
A Reuters/Ipsos five‑day poll, which closed on Monday, found that only one in four Americans believes President Donald Trump’s war with Iran was worth its costs, and a majority doubt a recent truce will produce lasting peace. The survey also found the conflict has hit Trump’s standing: his overall approval rating fell to 34%, returning to the lowest level of his second term last seen in April.
Just 24% of respondents said the war was worth its costs, while half said it was not and the remainder were unsure. Only 23% of Americans — including roughly half of Republicans — think the United States is in a stronger position with Iran now than before the war; 35% said U.S. influence is weaker and the rest said it was about the same or were undecided.
Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a preliminary deal on June 17 to reopen oil and gas shipping lanes that had been frozen by the conflict and to ease some U.S.-led economic pressure on Tehran. The agreement has coincided with a rapid drop in global crude prices, but most Americans still face gasoline costs well above levels before the February 28 U.S.-Israeli strikes that ignited the war. Iran’s retaliatory strikes had at one point shut down about a fifth of global oil trade and damaged energy facilities of U.S. regional partners.
Public skepticism about the deal’s durability is widespread: 63% of those polled said it is unlikely the accord will lead to lasting peace. That view crosses party lines — roughly half of Republicans and eight in 10 Democrats said lasting peace was unlikely. Only 18% of Americans overall — including 10% of Democrats and 34% of Republicans — believe the deal will produce lasting peace.
Trump, who won the 2024 election promising to lower inflation and keep the U.S. out of costly foreign wars, has long cultivated an image as a dealmaker. The poll also found his approval on handling the cost of living stood at 22%, near the lowest point of his presidency and below the rating of his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, at the end of his term.
