Arunachal Student Leader Fiercely Opposes Transfer of Tribal Scholarship Scheme to Mismanaged Social Justice Department
Student leader Charpo Taffo Sonam has openly criticized the state government’s decision to revert the management of the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme from the Department of Education back to the Social Justice, Empowerment, and Tribal Affairs (SJETA) Department. This scholarship program, under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, was initially handled by SJETA but was moved to the Department of Education after allegations of mismanagement surfaced.
During a press conference, Sonam highlighted that students had previously urged the transfer of the scholarship scheme to the Department of Education due to reported mishandling and misappropriation by SJETA during the 2016-17 academic year. Since the transfer, the Department of Education has been responsible for the program’s implementation.
However, a recent government notification mandates that all files, beneficiary data, and related documents be returned to the SJETA Department for “smooth implementation” of the scholarship program. It also directs the Department of Education to transfer any unspent funds for the academic year 2024-25 to SJETA.
Sonam raised concerns over SJETA’s ability to effectively manage the scheme, citing its previous failures. “Our concern is that when the SJETA department had failed in implementing the said scheme due to a lack of proper guidelines, how can we trust the SJETA Department again?” he questioned.
Calling for a permanent resolution, Sonam accused the state government of complicating the situation with the latest move. He announced his intention to submit a formal representation to the Chief Minister and the Department of Education in opposition to the notification, seeking public support for his cause. Sonam’s comments underline a broader concern regarding the efficiency and reliability of the SJETA Department in handling the critical scholarship scheme for students.
