Peace First: Criminal Matters Must Not Be Treated as Communal Issues
A joint body representing Mon district in Nagaland and Charaideo district in Assam, now renamed the Joint Peace Committee (JPC), has resolved that all inter-community disputes must be routed through it before any unilateral action. The decision was adopted unanimously at a meeting on November 3 hosted by the Konyak Union at its office meeting hall in Mon headquarters, where members of the erstwhile Joint Action Committee (JAC) from both districts deliberated on peace and cooperation.
The committee said the resolutions were adopted in the interest of maintaining peace, harmony, mutual cooperation and cordial relations among communities in the two neighbouring districts. It also announced that the organisation, previously the JAC, would now be called the JPC.
Under a key resolution aimed at preventing flare-ups, any incident, misunderstanding or situation on either side affecting community or district relations must first be promptly communicated to JPC officials. All parties are to exercise restraint and avoid unilateral decisions or actions without bringing the matter to the JPC for consultation and intervention.
The JPC resolved that criminal matters must not be viewed, interpreted or treated as communal issues. Both sides are to address such matters collectively and responsibly under the law and established legal procedures, ensuring fair, impartial and peaceful resolution. The committee will also discourage attempts to communalise criminal incidents or disturb communal harmony.
The JPC will hold a general meeting at least twice a year, once each in Mon and Charaideo, with special or emergency meetings convened by the President and Secretary General when necessary. Members approved the committee’s official letterhead and seal; the logo and flag will be considered at the next meeting. Identity cards for office-bearers and members will be issued and countersigned by the district administrations of Mon and Charaideo.
To strengthen people-to-people ties, the JPC will organise an annual cultural exchange programme involving communities from both districts, in collaboration with both district administrations and organisations. Both communities also agreed to allot suitable sites for a Konyak Ahng Morung in Charaideo district and a Tai-Ahom Cultural Centre at Mon headquarters. The committee resolved to press the respective administrations and police to strictly monitor drug abuse and trafficking.
Tingthok Konyak was appointed President and Diganta Changmei Secretary General of the JPC for 2026–2029, effective from November 3, 2026. Vacant posts will be filled through nominations by respective organisations, with names to be submitted to the President or Secretary General by November 20, 2026. Members pledged to uphold mutual trust, cooperation, peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility, and to serve as a common platform for dialogue and peaceful resolution of issues affecting people in both districts.
