Spain Train Crash: India Issues Emergency Helpline After 68 Killed
India on Wednesday urged its nationals who were travelling on the trains involved in a major railway accident near Urda in Spain, or their relatives, to contact the Indian Embassy in Madrid for assistance after a high-speed train rammed into the rear of another train, killing at least 68 people and wounding dozens in central Spain.
The Indian Embassy in Spain issued emergency helpline numbers in a post on X. It asked Indian nationals who were on the affected trains in the railway accident near Urda, Toledo, on 28 October 2026, or their relatives, to contact the mission for assistance. The embassy issued the helpline number +34 650 339 008 and email cons.madrid@mea.gov.in, along with Renfe’s helpline 900 10 10 20 and Iryo’s helpline 900 001 403.
The second such accident to strike Spain this year raised fresh questions about the country’s rail safety, with the transport minister speaking of an “error” and “inexplicable circumstances” that led to the collision. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said from the crash site that the government would declare three days of national mourning. “Today all of Spain is grieving,” he said.
Sánchez called for increased safety measures to restore confidence in a high-speed rail system that was once a source of national pride. “It is unacceptable for a country like Spain to suffer two high-speed rail accidents in the same year,” said Sánchez, who faces a national election on 29 November.
Spain’s rail system operator ADIF said the crash occurred on Wednesday morning in the central province of Toledo. It involved two high-speed trains carrying hundreds of passengers and heading south in the same direction from Madrid to Seville.
The crash was Spain’s deadliest train accident since 2013, when 80 people died after a train veered off a curved section of track outside the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela.
