Assam Drug Bust: 30,000 Yaba Tablets Worth Rs 7.5 Crore Seized at Amingaon
Police in Assam’s Kamrup district have seized 30,000 suspected Yaba tablets and arrested a 31-year-old man during an operation at Amingaon, in one of the notable drug hauls reported from the region recently. The seized consignment has been valued at Rs 4.50 crore by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), while its estimated street value stands at Rs 7.50 crore.
The tablets weigh approximately 3 kg, excluding packaging. Yaba is a methamphetamine-based stimulant tablet, commonly trafficked in pill form.
According to sources, police received specific information that a suspected narcotics courier would transport a drug consignment to a district in Lower Assam, switching between modes of public transport during the journey to avoid detection.
Acting on the tip-off, a police team intercepted the suspected carrier at Amingaon and recovered the tablets from a red shoulder bag he was carrying at the time of the arrest.
The arrested man has been identified as Raj Ali, 31, son of Md Rahim Ali, a resident of Paikan Part II village under Krishnai Police Station in Goalpara district.
The operation was led by Kalyan Kumar Pathak, Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Kamrup.
Police have initiated the necessary legal proceedings in connection with the seizure. Further details regarding the investigation were not immediately available.
The haul underscores the scale of narcotics movement through Kamrup district and the methods employed by couriers, who frequently change vehicles mid-journey to evade interception, as authorities continue efforts to curb the drug trade in Assam.
