Champhai Celebrates Stunning Landscape & Culture at Hnahsin Kut Festival
The 2026 edition of Hnahsin Kut, the Festival of the Cosmos, drew to a close on Friday night after 11 days of open-air celebrations in Champhai town, located in northeastern Mizoram near the Myanmar border. The festival, organized by the Champhai Nature Conservancy (CNC) with support from the Mizoram government, ran from October 6 to 16. It was designed to showcase how community-led initiatives can weave together nature, culture, and creative experiences to drive sustainable tourism and generate local economic opportunities.
Addressing the closing ceremony, Mizoram’s tourism minister, Lalnghinglova Hmar, extended festive greetings to the people and underscored the economic and other advantages Hnahsin Kut had brought to Champhai and its surrounding regions. He also expressed gratitude to the CNC, the community-based organization that conceived and launched the festival, for its dedication and efforts.
Hmar noted that residents of Mizoram are increasingly valuing the state’s scenic destinations and the work of Mizo artistes. As more Mizos travel within their own state, money circulates through the local economy, benefiting businesses and performers alike, he said. He further remarked that photographs and travel accounts shared by visitors help promote Mizoram’s attractions beyond its borders, contributing to the growth of the tourism sector.
The minister revealed that Mizoram is projected to welcome nearly as many tourists in 2026 as its population, adding that Hnahsin Kut and Champhai had played a significant role in this milestone. He also highlighted that the festival achieved a social media reach of 22.5 million, a testament to its growing popularity and visibility.
Describing Mizoram as being as beautiful as any destination in the world, Hmar said Champhai and the state possess the potential to host events at national and international levels. He invited visitors from outside Mizoram to return with friends and family, encouraging them to share the state’s natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and warm hospitality. The closing evening featured a concert performed by several popular Mizo artistes, which drew a large crowd and brought the festival to a fitting conclusion.
