Police are investigating the death of Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, whose body was found at a homestay in Guwahati on September 26, as a murder staged to resemble suicide. investigators suspect that her boyfriend, Ashiq Ali, also identified in some reports as Asif Ali, strangled her and later fled. Ali was taken into police custody and remanded on October 7. Homestay worker Minto Ali is also in police custody, while Ashiq’s friend Rupam Shekhia has been questioned and summoned again after his name surfaced in the case.
According to Nimisha’s family, the five-year university student left home saying she would meet friends for a meal. At around 2 a.m., she called her mother and said, “They are twisting my chest. I cannot breathe.” Her mother heard two men speaking in the background, but Nimisha’s phone was switched off soon afterward. Her parents alleged that she had long been physically abused by Ashiq and had spoken to them about the abuse.
A report submitted to the magistrate said Nimisha had visible injuries on her face, hands, head and private parts. Investigators recovered her body from Room No. 9 of “Rudras Kitchen Homestay” in Garigaon, while her clothes were found in Room No. 10. A bloodstained pillow was recovered from the room where she was found. The two rooms were connected by a door that could be opened with a slight push. The report said Ashiq had admitted to sexual intercourse with Nimisha.
Rupam, who booked Room No. 9, reportedly told investigators that he served alcohol at a gathering attended by Nimisha, Ashiq, Minto and other men. He said he left the homestay at about 10 p.m., visited Mirza and returned home the next morning. Police suspect that an argument between Rupam and Nimisha may have preceded the killing. Rupam went missing after leaving for Adabari in the evening, prompting his mother to file a report. Azara police arrested him on September 29 on a liquor-supply complaint connected to the gathering. He was questioned, released and later called back to the police station.
Minto, a worker at the homestay, was arrested on September 27 after investigators alleged that he had assisted Ashiq. He was subsequently granted four days of police custody. The case remains under investigation, with authorities yet to establish the full sequence of events and the roles of those arrested. Nimisha’s death has prompted protests in Guwahati and demands for justice.
