Akhil Gogoi Continues Indefinite Satyagraha for Assam Flood Relief
Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi continued his indefinite satyagraha, or protest, at the Assam Assembly premises on October 3, demanding the immediate release of promised flood relief and compensation to families affected by the devastating floods in the state. More than 24 hours after he began protesting near the Gandhi statue, Gogoi said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the chief secretary had not met him, no cabinet minister had visited the site, and no process had begun to address the victims’ demands.
Gogoi said it was unprecedented for a sitting MLA to stage a satyagraha inside the Assembly campus while the House was not in session. “It is an unprecedented event in the history of Assam that a sitting MLA is staging a Satyagraha within the Assembly campus,” he said. He has demanded that Sarma and the chief secretary come forward for discussions on relief and compensation.
The Raijor Dal leader said his protest was centred on three demands, including the release of pending flood assistance. According to him, the government had promised Rs 25,000 in emergency aid, but only the first instalment of Rs 15,000 had reached about 70 per cent of affected families. He claimed the remaining Rs 10,000 had not been disbursed, while 30 to 40 per cent of families had not received even the initial payment. Gogoi said the protest aimed to expedite the release of the outstanding assistance.
He also questioned the state government’s repeated surveys, saying they had not led to a concrete decision on compensation. Gogoi alleged that the government had cited its financial constraints and indicated that additional compensation would need to be secured from the Centre. He said Sarma had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi twice, but no assurance had been given on further aid. He also criticised Modi for not visiting Assam to assess the flood situation or meet affected people.
Gogoi had set October 1 as a deadline for releasing the promised assistance and is demanding Rs 10 lakh in compensation for families that suffered major losses. He said the indefinite protest would continue until the government acted on the demands.
The Assam government disputed Gogoi’s claims about pending assistance. Sarma said surveys were already under way and that 55,000 families had been identified for aid, while accusing Gogoi of seeking political credit for relief efforts.
