AI Plot to Weaken Government? Explosive Claims After Final Hearing
One day after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced the arrest of several accused in the 2024 militant attack on Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh’s convoy, the former chief minister on September 30 questioned whether a broader political network had worked to destabilise the state and weaken his elected government. The attack on June 10, 2024, near Keisham village in Kangpokpi district on National Highway 37 injured two security personnel and damaged a government vehicle.
In a post on X, Biren praised the NIA for arresting a leader of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in connection with the convoy attack. He claimed that those accused in the assault, the April 2026 IED attack in Tulawobi and other incidents were UKNA cadres and were not covered by the agreement titled “Suspension of Operations” between the militant group and the state government.
The April 7 explosion in Tulawobi, Bishnupur district, killed two children and critically injured their mother. The NIA has already arrested one accused in that case.
Biren said the latest arrests could provide crucial leads and demanded a thorough investigation into all related incidents. He asked whether the accused had acted solely for personal gain or whether a larger network driven by political interests had deliberately sought to destabilise Manipur and weaken the then-elected government. Singh said the public had a right to know whether such a network was behind the violence and instability that began on May 3, 2023, and called for every conspiracy to be exposed and those responsible to be brought to justice.
Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands displaced since communal violence erupted in Manipur in May 2023. Biren resigned as chief minister in February 2025, after which the state came under President’s Rule. Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as chief minister on February 4, 2026, ending President’s Rule. The NIA continues to investigate several cases involving armed attacks and violence in Manipur.
