Trump Says He and Xi Discussed Release of Political Prisoners
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he raised the possible release of political prisoners with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting last week, including the cases of US citizen and Myanmar scholar Min Zin and Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai.
Trump confirmed the discussion when questioned by reporters but did not provide details about any commitments made by Beijing. “We had some very, very important discussions,” he said, adding that he hoped they would prove fruitful.
Min Zin was arrested by Chinese authorities in June and was designated by Washington as wrongfully detained in August. Lai, one of Hong Kong’s most prominent critics of China, founded the now-shuttered Apple Daily newspaper. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of publishing seditious materials.
The White House had said before Xi’s visit that Trump was expected to raise the cases of people it considered to be wrongfully detained in China. It did not specify whether he also intended to raise broader concerns about Beijing’s treatment of Tibetans, the Uyghur Muslim minority and political dissent, or China’s new “ethnic unity” law.
Trump has made securing the release of Americans detained overseas a priority, including in China. His comments, however, did not indicate whether the discussions with Xi led to any concrete action. His administration also did not say whether broader human rights issues were raised during the meeting.
