NSCN (K-YA), RPF Claim Changlang Ambush That Killed Assam Rifles Jawan
Insurgent outfits NSCN (K-YA) and the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) claimed responsibility for an ambush on an Assam Rifles patrol in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district that killed one soldier and left four others injured.
The attack took place around 6:30 a.m. on September 29 along the India-Myanmar border, where the patrol was passing through an area with border-fencing work underway, officials said. In a joint statement, the two outfits said they had targeted personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles stationed near Nampong.
The soldier killed in the attack was identified as Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, who was 42 years old. The four injured personnel were taken to a hospital for treatment, but their condition was not immediately known.
Security forces subsequently intensified operations in the area to track down those responsible and strengthen security along the border. Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu confirmed on September 29 that security operations had been stepped up following the ambush.
The India-Myanmar border in Changlang district remains a sensitive area, with insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary, officials said. Further details about the ongoing security operations and investigation were awaited.
