Sohra International Half Marathon Returns to Cherrapunjee on September 21
SHILLONG: The eagerly-awaited 3rd edition of the ‘Sohra International Half Marathon’ is set to kick off on September 21 in Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. The event is expected to draw more than 7,000 runners from across the globe, including elite athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Bangladesh.
Sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the marathon is being organized by the Meghalaya Athletics Association in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya. Dikki D. Shira, Director of Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs, has confirmed that adequate funding has been provided for this high-profile event. Confident in its success, Shira emphasized that all necessary preparations are complete and sub-committees are operational.
John F. Kharshiing, President of MSOA, stressed the importance of health and fitness in Meghalaya, underlining the marathon’s role in fostering these values. The event will feature various categories including the 21k elite open (above 18 years), 21k open (above 18 years), 10k open (40 to 50 years), 10k open (50 to 60 years), 10k veteran (above 60 years), and a 5k fun run.
The number of participants has surged, with 7,736 runners already registered. Each race will start from different points: the 21k category from Laitsohpliah, the 10k category from Wah Kba, and the 5k category from Cherrapunjee Presbyterian School. Those interested in participating have until September 10 to register.
In related news, Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has dismissed any notion of restrictions on Assam vehicles during the event, further ensuring smooth proceedings for all attendees.
