Assam Students Stage Urgent Protest Outside Bijni College Over Fee Hike
Students from seven colleges in Chirang district staged a protest outside Bijni College on Monday against a recent hike in undergraduate admission and semester fees, demanding an immediate review of the revised fee structure. They said the increase would add a heavy financial burden on students from economically weaker families and could force some to discontinue their studies.
Student representatives and members of various student organisations from across Chirang participated in the demonstration and submitted a joint memorandum outlining their demands. The memorandum was handed to Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu through the Chirang Deputy Commissioner.
The protesters’ principal demand is a 100 percent fee waiver for students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. They also sought exemption for BPL students who currently have outstanding fees or academic backlogs from previous semesters, arguing that past dues should not bar them from continuing their education.
Students additionally called for a reduction in the admission fee for the seventh semester of the fourth year, saying the increased charges would particularly hit those already struggling financially. Organisers warned that without relief, many low-income students might be forced to drop out.
The demonstrators urged the state government to review the fee hike urgently and make decisions in the interest of students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. They asked authorities to consider the memorandum and respond with measures that ensure access to higher education for economically vulnerable students.
