Agartala, 14 August 2026 — Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Friday laid the foundation stone for the proposed Agartala Government Eye Hospital at the Capital Complex, describing the project as a major expansion of specialised ophthalmic healthcare in Tripura. The government has allocated about ₹123 crore through SASKI for the new facility, which is planned as a G+4 building with provisions for future vertical expansion.
Saha said the existing Eye Department has become inadequate to meet rising patient expectations and the growing need for advanced treatment. He noted that modern ophthalmology now provides specialised care for conditions such as glaucoma, cataract, retinal disorders, squint and serious eye problems in newborns. “People’s expectations are much higher in this era of modernisation,” he said, emphasising the need for a spacious hospital equipped with modern biomedical technology and staffed by specialist doctors.
The proposed eye hospital is intended to offer advanced diagnostics and treatments and to relieve pressure on current services by centralising specialised ophthalmic care. Funding through SASKI will support construction and initial outfitting, while the building’s design allows for additional floors if demand increases.
Saha said the new facility will also bolster medical education in the state. Postgraduate specialisation in ophthalmology has already begun, and the hospital will provide improved infrastructure and training opportunities for students and resident doctors.
The chief minister added that the government is pursuing several other health projects simultaneously, including a Mother and Child Health unit, a new Dental College building with a hostel, and de-addiction centres across districts with roughly ₹20 crore earmarked for each. Construction of a rehabilitation centre at Bishramganj has already started.
On the proposed increase in MBBS seats at Agartala Government Medical College, Saha said the intake will rise beyond the initially discussed 100 seats and that work on the expansion is underway. Responding to recent security incidents at GBP Hospital, he said the government has ordered measures to strengthen surveillance and security and that there will be “absolutely no compromise” on safety.
Saha also said the Medicine Department is being revamped and disclosed plans to eventually replace the decades-old main GB Hospital building with a new high-rise structure, though he did not provide a specific completion timeline.
