Guwahati, July 27, 2026 — After several months of renovation, the iconic Silpukhuri Park in Guwahati was formally reopened to the public on Monday, July 27, with Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai inaugurating the revamped green space and urging residents to help keep it clean and well maintained. The state government said the reopening is part of a wider push to create safer, more vibrant public areas that improve citizens’ quality of life.
To promote regular public use, the minister announced that entry will be free daily from 5:30 am to 10:00 am; a nominal fee will apply after 10:00 am, while senior citizens aged 60 and above will continue to enjoy free admission all day. Before the ceremony, Rai inspected the upgraded facilities and spoke with visitors to gather feedback on the renovation.
The 4.7-bigha park was redeveloped at an administrative cost of Rs 98 lakh. Upgrades include new internal pathways, an improved drainage system, repaired and repainted boundary walls, modern children’s play equipment, a decorative fountain, energy-efficient lighting, garden benches, dustbins, a new ticket counter, and upgraded sanitary and plumbing facilities.
Appealing to the public to treat the park as a shared civic asset, Rai urged visitors to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and protecting public property. “Only through collective responsibility can we make our cities and towns better places to live,” he said, calling for community involvement in the park’s upkeep.
Rai also directed the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) to clean the park’s pond surface during winter while preserving its natural bed rather than cementing it, aiming to retain the pond’s ecological character. He added that similar parks are being planned across Guwahati and other parts of Assam as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen urban green spaces.
The inauguration was attended by New Guwahati MLA Diplu Ranjan Sarma, GMDA Deputy Chairmen Abdul Mannan Faruk and Dhira Talukdar, along with other officials and dignitaries. According to the government, the renovation has significantly improved the park’s aesthetics, accessibility and safety, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
