Chennai Mayor Files Cyber Harassment Complaint; Meets Commissioner
Chennai Mayor R. Priya on Monday, July 27, met Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraj at the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office in Vepery and lodged a formal complaint alleging sustained online harassment, prompting the Cyber Crime Wing to open an investigation.
Priya, widely described as Tamil Nadu’s youngest mayor, sought immediate police intervention against unidentified individuals she says have targeted her through social media and other digital channels. The complaint has drawn attention across political and civic circles in Chennai.
According to the complaint, the harassment has taken place on platforms including WhatsApp and Facebook. Priya alleged that morphed photographs and misleadingly edited images depicting her in a defamatory manner have been circulated online with the apparent aim of damaging her reputation and misleading the public.
She further alleged that videos of speeches she delivered at official functions and public events were being selectively edited and shared out of context to spread false narratives. The complaint describes the activity as a sustained campaign intended to tarnish her public image.
The mayor told police the harassment was not confined to social media. Unidentified persons allegedly made repeated calls and sent messages to her official office telephone number, disrupting office functions and causing distress to staff.
Following the complaint, police registered a case and the Cyber Crime Wing began efforts to identify the social media accounts and phone numbers implicated. Investigators will examine digital evidence, including social media posts, WhatsApp messages and call records, to trace the suspects.
Police officials said they will also assess whether the actions, if proven, amount to offences under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, and whether further legal steps are warranted.
The incident has renewed public concern in Chennai about the misuse of social media for harassment, defamation and the circulation of manipulated content.
