Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on July 26 that the state’s flood death toll has risen to 66, including one fatality in Guwahati Urban, and announced a Rs 12-crore relief initiative by the Assam BJP to aid flood-affected families. The package will fund the distribution of 2 lakh mekhela-chadors for women and clothing for 2 lakh children across the state.
Sarma appealed to BJP workers across Assam to take an active role in relief operations, urging party units to help identify affected communities and assist with distribution on the ground.
Under the plan, supporters who wish to contribute less than Rs 2,000 have been asked to hand their donations to their local MLAs, while donors giving more than Rs 2,000 can deposit funds directly into a designated BJP bank account; party officials said account details will be shared on social media.
The Chief Minister said BJP workers from Assam and other parts of the country have already pledged support. He expressed confidence that the targeted Rs 12 crore will be raised within the next four to five days, enabling prompt delivery of aid.
Sarma said the assistance is intended to reach flood-hit families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat districts. The relief drive and mobilization of party workers aim to address urgent needs for clothing and basic supplies among displaced and affected households.
