New Delhi, July 26: India on Sunday observed the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas with nationwide tributes to the 527 soldiers who died in the 1999 Kargil War and to the thousands of personnel who fought to recapture strategic heights in Ladakh. Commemorative events were held across the country as political and military leaders paid homage to the fallen and their families.
At the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth led tributes, saying his presence on the occasion filled him with “a kind of new energy, a new pride.” He bowed in respect to the martyrs and their families and reaffirmed the Indian Army’s commitment to serving the nation and elevating its pride.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who attended the Drass event, said the adversary had underestimated the courage and resolve of Indian soldiers. “The enemy failed to gauge the heights of our Army’s valour and resolve. Our soldiers not only scaled the mountain heights but also transcended every definition of human limits,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, calling July 26 a date that fills every Indian with pride. “There are certain dates in our lives for which we do not need to look at the calendar. Today, July 26, is one such date,” he said. In a social media post, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the armed forces’ “extraordinary courage and commitment towards securing India,” saying their valour will continue to inspire generations.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also honoured the soldiers, remembering their courage and supreme sacrifice in defending the nation’s borders.
Kargil Vijay Diwas marks India’s victory in the 1999 conflict fought in the Kargil, Drass, Batalik, Mushkoh and Kaksar sectors of Ladakh, and commemorates Operation Vijay, during which forces reclaimed key positions without crossing the Line of Control. Reported by IANS.
