Bajali Farmers Urge Assam Authorities: Restore Drainage Now
Farmers in Assam’s Bajali district have appealed to local and highway authorities to clear a blocked drainage channel and remove alleged encroachments after waterlogging left nearly 100 bighas of agricultural land uncultivated this season. Villagers say accumulated rainwater has rendered the land at Dolo Pathar-Baghmara Adarsha Gaon’s only agricultural field-unsuitable for planting, threatening this season’s crops and livelihoods.
According to residents, the field is supposed to drain through a hume pipe culvert running beneath National Highway 127(A). They allege that the surface drainage channel leading to the culvert has been encroached upon by nearby residents, with permanent boundary walls built on government land. The villagers say soil and debris have clogged the drain, preventing water from flowing into the culvert.
As a result, farmers report that nearly 100 bighas (a local land measure) of cultivable land have remained waterlogged and were left fallow during the current agricultural season. The prolonged standing water has blocked cultivation activities and raised fears of crop loss and reduced income for smallholders in the village.
Residents told officials they have submitted memoranda to the Bajali MLA and the National Highways Sub-Divisional Office in Bajali, urging immediate intervention. They have requested that authorities clear the blocked channel, remove the alleged encroachments on government land, and restore the free flow of water so cultivation can resume.
Villagers emphasized that timely action is essential to prevent further losses and safeguard agricultural activity in the area. The community’s appeal underscores wider concerns about rural drainage management, encroachment on public land, and the impact of blocked waterways on food production and local livelihoods.
