Manipur: 55-Year-Old Killed in Imphal East; Wife Battles for Life
A 55-year-old man was shot dead and his wife critically injured after two unidentified assailants forced their way into a house in Keirao Wangkhem Mamang Leikai, Imphal East, in the early hours of Sunday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Ngangkham Thambou; his 52-year-old wife, Ngangkham Keinatombi, is receiving treatment in critical condition.
Police said the attack occurred at around 2:30 am when two men allegedly forced open the front door and tried to enter the bedroom of the couple’s children. Thambou confronted the intruders, and a scuffle followed in which one of the assailants allegedly opened fire, killing him on the spot. The attackers then allegedly assaulted Keinatombi with sharp-edged weapons before fleeing the scene.
Keinatombi was first admitted to Shija Hospital in Langol and later transferred to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for advanced care. Doctors at RIMS described her condition as critical. Thambou’s body has been taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The incident sparked widespread outrage in the locality. Residents held a public meeting and formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) that has demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible by July 22. The JAC announced the family will not accept Thambou’s body until the accused are apprehended.
A police team led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Imphal East), personnel from Irilbung Police Station and forensic experts visited the crime scene and launched an investigation. Authorities have registered a case and said a comprehensive probe is under way to determine the motive and identify the perpetrators.
