Revealed: India Moved 12 LPG Vessels Toll-Free via Strait of Hormuz
New Delhi, June 29 (IANS) — Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday that India moved more than a dozen LPG vessels through the Strait of Hormuz without paying tolls and rapidly reconfigured refineries to boost cooking-gas output, measures he said helped the country navigate what he described as the largest energy disruption in modern history.
Puri said the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed for nearly four months, prompting the government to take a series of emergency steps to keep energy supplies flowing and protect consumers from the fallout. “Even as the world faced one of the worst energy crises and disrupted supply chains, India under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi effectively shielded the energy consumers from any negative impact,” he wrote on X.
In his post, the minister added that “over 12 Indian LPG vessels were quietly moved out of Hormuz without paying any tolls.” He said New Delhi diversified crude-oil imports, expanded energy infrastructure and secured alternative LPG supplies from multiple countries to avoid domestic shortages.
Among the interventions was a temporary central excise duty cut of Rs 10 per litre on fuel in March. Puri also said measures were taken to protect household cooking gas, including mandatory digital authentication codes to prevent diversion by black marketers.
To raise domestic LPG availability quickly, several refineries that had not previously produced cooking gas were reconfigured within days. That, Puri said, lifted LPG production from about 35 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) per day to 54 TMT per day. He added that India arranged fresh LPG supplies from countries such as Algeria, Japan and Canada, while securing additional cargoes from the United States to meet demand.
Puri portrayed the steps as a coordinated response that kept cooking gas and fuel supplies stable despite the global energy turmoil.
