A special court in Pune on June 25, 2026 sentenced a 65-year-old man to death for the rape and murder of a three-year-old girl from Nasrapur village in Pune district. The court said it reached the capital punishment after finding the accused guilty on the basis of circumstantial evidence and testimony placing him with the child shortly before the crime; the verdict was delivered within 60 days of the incident.
According to the prosecution, the attack took place on May 1, 2026, when the toddler, who had gone to her aunt’s house, was allegedly lured into a nearby cowshed by the accused. The child was reportedly raped and brutally killed; her body was found in the cowshed after family members launched a search when she went missing.
The crime sparked widespread outrage across the area, with angry residents staging road blockades and protests in Nasrapur and other parts of Pune, demanding the harshest possible punishment for the perpetrator.
The case was handled on a fast-track basis. Police arrested the accused on the day of the incident and filed a 1,200-page chargesheet within 16 days. The court framed charges on May 28, final arguments concluded on June 20, and sentencing followed on June 25, reflecting the expedited schedule of the trial.
In its ruling the court said the prosecution had established guilt through a combination of material evidence and circumstantial witness accounts. The judgment noted the gravity of the offence and observed that the accused, despite earlier acquittals in two cases, showed no signs of remorse or potential for reform, describing him as a continuing danger to society.
Defence counsel Himmatarao Suryavanshi argued there was no conclusive proof that the accused and the child had been seen together and urged the court to commute the sentence to life imprisonment, citing the accused’s age and family circumstances. Public prosecutor Ajay Mishra, however, pressed for the death penalty given the brutality of the crime and the victim’s young age.
Member of Parliament Supriya Sule welcomed the verdict on social media, saying the girl and her family had finally received justice. She described the case as deeply tragic, supported the fast-track handling of such matters, and thanked the police for conducting a proper investigation and presenting evidence in court.
