U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked Congress for nearly $88 billion in supplemental spending, largely to cover costs tied to the war with Iran, a request that arrives amid rising unease in both parties over the conflict and its political fallout. The White House submitted $87.6 billion in emergency funding that would fund military operations and other priorities ranging from farmer assistance to Ebola response efforts in central Africa and domestic infrastructure projects.
The proposal followed a largely symbolic congressional resolution, passed a day earlier, urging the president to end U.S. hostilities with Iran unless lawmakers explicitly authorize further military action. It also comes as the administration works to convert a preliminary agreement with Tehran into a final settlement after months of fighting that disrupted global energy markets, pushed up prices and exposed divisions within the Republican Party.
White House Budget Director Russell Vought sent the funding request in a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, urging Congress to act quickly on what he called “important and urgent requests.” The administration said the bulk of the package would cover military costs related to the Iran conflict.
The White House sought roughly $67 billion for the Pentagon, including $21 billion earmarked for munitions and other military capabilities, $17.3 billion for operational costs and $12.1 billion for classified programs. Additional requests include nearly $768 million for the Energy Department for nuclear and energy security matters connected to Iran, and $300 million for State Department embassy security and construction in countries surrounding Iran.
Beyond defense items, the supplemental request includes tens of billions of dollars aimed at supporting U.S. farmers affected by global market disruption, funding international Ebola response efforts in central Africa and financing domestic infrastructure projects deemed urgent by the administration.
The request sets up a likely tense debate on Capitol Hill over scope, oversight and the political implications of further financial backing for the Iran campaign, as lawmakers weigh support for military needs against calls for clearer congressional authorization and a return to diplomacy.
