Shocking: Guwahati Traffic Constable Rekibul Ali Suspended for Bribe
A traffic constable posted with the Dispur Traffic Branch was suspended after he was allegedly caught accepting a cash bribe beneath the Ganeshguri flyover in Guwahati, officials said on Sunday, June 21. The incident drew public attention and prompted an inquiry by the Guwahati Police Commissionerate.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora said the case involved a white Scorpio driven by Rajesh Deka. The vehicle was allegedly in breach of multiple traffic rules, including fitment of black-tinted windows and a flag stand. The on-duty constable reportedly told Deka the violations could attract a penalty of around Rs 7,000 to Rs 7,500 under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Instead of following the prescribed procedure, the constable allegedly demanded Rs 2,500. As the cash was being handed over, members of the public noticed the transaction and created an uproar at the spot. Personnel from Dispur Police Station reached the location, recovered Rs 2,500 from the constable’s pocket and initiated departmental action.
Bora said the officer, identified as Rekibul Ali, was initially placed under reserve close and has now been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry. “Rekibul Ali has been suspended with immediate effect and departmental proceedings will be initiated against him. Guwahati Traffic Police never collect fines in cash,” he said.
The DCP added that the department is examining all aspects of the incident and will verify alleged violations through CCTV footage and other available records. “If there were tinted glasses on the vehicle, there will be evidence. We will verify all the alleged violations through CCTV footage and other available records before taking further action,” Bora said.
Bora also reiterated that Guwahati Traffic Police no longer collect fines directly from violators: an SMS notification is issued and offenders must pay through the prescribed banking or digital payment system. “We do not follow the old practice of collecting fines in cash. People should never pay cash to any police personnel and should immediately inform us if such an incident occurs,” he said.
The inquiry into the matter is currently underway.
