Imphal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress have clashed over how to handle Manipur’s volatile border situation, with opposition leaders accusing the state government of inaction while the ruling party emphasizes efforts to restore order. The dispute intensified after the brutal killing of six Liangmai Naga men, a case that opposition figures say remains unaddressed.
Congress MP Bimol Akoijam sharply criticized the state administration for its silence and the failure to arrest suspects in the murders, openly questioning whether the government was protecting certain actors. He demanded answers from authorities about who the administration might be shielding and called for accountability.
During a visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, Akoijam met three women who were recently freed after being held hostage by militants. He expressed deep concern about the escalation of violence in the hill areas, which he said has been rising since May 3, 2023, and vowed to raise the matter in Parliament to seek justice for victims’ families.
Akoijam also noted that the deadline for the Central Government’s probe committee had been extended by six months at the state’s request, and said he would press for progress on the investigation at the national level.
Meanwhile, newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi of the BJP pledged to work to restore peace and normalcy in the state. At a felicitation event at the Youth Club in Brahmapur, Imphal, she thanked the central party leadership for her unopposed election to the Upper House. Legislative Assembly Speaker Th. Satyabrata and local legislators, including Mayang Imphal MLA Kongkham Robindro and Kshetrigao AC MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan, attended the programme, where community leaders honoured Sharda for her service to the party since 1995.
