NIA Given 45 Days to Deepen Probe into Bangladesh Activist’s Murder
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been granted additional time by a Special NIA Court to continue probing an alleged cross‑border murder conspiracy linked to the December 2025 shooting death of Bangladeshi political activist Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, with the overall investigation period now extended to 135 days after Vacation Judge Saurabh Pratap Singh approved the agency’s request.
The inquiry is focused on the route the suspects allegedly used to enter India via the Meghalaya border and on whether they received local assistance while moving through border areas. Investigators say the suspects crossed into India shortly after the killing in Dhaka and were later intercepted in Bongaon, West Bengal, as they allegedly tried to return to Bangladesh.
Three accused — identified as Rahul alias Faisal Karim Masud, Alamgir Hossain and Philip Sangma — were remanded to judicial custody for three days by Vacation Judge Meenu Kaushik on June 19. Investigators have identified Philip Sangma as a Bangladeshi citizen.
In its plea for more time, the NIA told the court that fresh evidence became available on June 8 following a Supreme Court order. The agency said that material, together with documents recently obtained from the West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force, still needs to be examined and verified.
The latest developments come about three months after the accused were arrested in March 2026. The NIA is examining forensic leads, witness statements and the newly obtained documents to establish the movement of the suspects and any networks that may have assisted them across the Meghalaya border region.
Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who played a prominent role during Bangladesh’s July 2024 uprising, was killed in a shooting that triggered unrest in parts of Bangladesh. A separate chargesheet filed in Bangladesh has already named 17 suspects; the NIA’s probe is limited to the route and cross‑border links alleged to have been used after the killing.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that the additional time will allow the NIA to verify the new material and complete its examination of documents and other leads before filing further submissions in court.
