Mizoram Fast-Tracks Tuivai Hydel Project for Energy Independence
Aizawl: The Mizoram government on Friday resolved to intensify efforts to make the state self-reliant in power production, deciding to fast-track the 132 MW Tuivai Hydel Project in Saitual district and accelerate the corporatisation of the Power and Electricity (P&E) Department, officials said.
A review meeting chaired by State Power Minister F. Rodingliana examined progress on decisions taken following Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s meeting with Chief Minister Lalduhoma during his visit to Mizoram on May 29, the government said.
Senior officials from the finance, planning and P&E departments reviewed major energy initiatives, including the proposed Tuivai Hydel Project near the Manipur border and the Tuichang pumped storage project, both seen as key to strengthening the state’s power infrastructure.
Discussion centred on funding mechanisms and execution plans for these projects as part of a broader strategy to achieve energy independence for Mizoram.
Officials said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 132 MW Tuivai Hydel Project has been completed, and the meeting approved allocation of funds so work can begin at the earliest opportunity.
The state also agreed to speed up the corporatisation process of the P&E Department to improve efficiency and support future sector growth. Corporatisation is expected to create clearer commercial accountability while enabling better access to finance and project management practices.
Engineer‑in‑Chief Ngursailova Sailo reported significant recent improvements in the department, particularly in power generation capacity, and said staff backed corporatisation provided it protects the interests of both the public and the government.
Sailo added that an unbundling process is under way to establish separate entities for generation, transmission and distribution — a structural step officials described as essential to eventual corporatisation.
The review was attended by Adviser to the Chief Minister (Finance) and MLA TBC Lalvenchhunga along with senior officials from the finance, planning and P&E departments.
