Assam Tragedy: AASU Demands Probe After Student Killed by Tree
A college student was killed and a fellow student injured when a decayed tree toppled onto their scooter in the Bhootnath–Kalipur area of Guwahati on Friday morning, prompting outrage and demands for a formal probe from the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). The deceased has been identified as Parismita Hazarika; her companion, Jyotirmoy Mohan, sustained injuries and is being treated at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The two were reportedly en route to appear for an examination at Pandu College when the tree, standing near a railway track, fell on their vehicle.
AASU president Utpal Sarma condemned the incident as the result of official negligence, saying, “Society cannot and should not treat the death of Parismita Hazarika as a mere accident. Calling it an unfortunate incident alone would be an injustice. This is the tragic consequence of the extreme negligence of certain irresponsible officials and employees.” He demanded a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
Sarma said the tree had been dead and standing for an extended period and should have been removed earlier. “The tree had remained dead and standing for a long time. It should have been cut and removed much earlier in the interest of public safety. Why did the Railway authorities and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation fail to act? They must answer,” he added, naming both agencies and pressing for accountability.
The AASU has called for action against negligent officials, compensation for Hazarika’s family, and financial and medical support for the injured student. Local police have registered legal proceedings and launched an investigation into the incident. The case has reignited concerns about the maintenance of roadside and railway-adjacent trees and the responsibilities of civic bodies to prevent avoidable tragedies.
