Indus Water Treaty: Rajnath Singh — No Water for Terror Patrons
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday, June 12, 2026, condemned what he called Pakistan’s support for terrorism and warned that the NDA government would not allow the waters of the Sindhu (Indus) river to be supplied to those who sponsor violence. Speaking at an “Intellectuals Meet” organised by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad, Singh reiterated the government’s decision to suspend provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in response to the Pahalgam terror attack and invoked Operation Sindoor as proof of New Delhi’s readiness to act against cross-border threats.
Singh said Operation Sindoor demonstrated that the government “knows how to respond to those who do not understand the language of peace and harmony.” He told the audience that, following the Pahalgam attack, India had suspended parts of the IWT and made clear that “those whose tears have dried up should not expect water from us,” adding, “We will not let the waters of the Sindhu reach the patrons of terrorists and enemies of humanity.” His remarks echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier declaration after the Pahalgam attack that “blood and water will not flow together.”
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed on September 19, 1960, governs allocation and use of the Indus system rivers between India and Pakistan. Singh said India had placed the treaty in abeyance after last year’s Pahalgam attack, invoking its rights as a sovereign nation under international law until Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably” disavows support for cross-border terrorism. He emphasised that treaties cannot operate independently of ground realities and that the IWT would remain effectively suspended until what New Delhi describes as Pakistan’s “abnormal hostility” is addressed.
Turning to domestic achievements, Singh reviewed the NDA’s record over the past 12 years, citing the abrogation of Article 370, progress in making large areas largely free of Naxal violence, the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, nationwide electrification, and reforms in the justice system. “There was a time when Congress used to say that no one could abolish Article 370. But you have seen our government abolish it with ease,” he said.
On Kashmir, Singh said the region-once synonymous with terrorism-is seeing renewed economic activity, with increases in tourism, investment and jobs. He noted symbolic and social changes in Srinagar: the tricolour flying at Lal Chowk, Krishna Janmashtami being celebrated there for the first time, Muharram processions taking place peacefully, and cinema halls that had been closed for decades reopening to the public.
