The 2026 FIFA World Cup will open with an unprecedented three separate ceremonies across North America as the tournament kicks off in Mexico, Canada and the United States. The month-long competition officially begins on June 11 in Mexico City, with the first opening ceremony staged before the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa; ceremonies in Toronto and Los Angeles follow on June 12 ahead of the opening matches for Canada and the United States.
FIFA said the multi-city launch marks the first time a World Cup has opened with ceremonies in more than one host city and aims to reflect the tournament’s tri-nation character. The Mexico City programme will spotlight Mexico’s cultural heritage through music, dance and artistic performances, featuring indigenous artists alongside contemporary folkloric acts.
Mexico City’s celebrations will feature headline appearances by Shakira and Burna Boy, who are set to perform the official FIFA World Cup anthem, “Dai Dai.” Additional performers scheduled for the Mexico City event include Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná and Tyla.
Toronto’s ceremony will showcase Canadian talent, with acts such as Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Alyanna, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream and William Prince on the bill. Los Angeles will host a star-studded event ahead of the United States’ opening fixture against Paraguay, featuring Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema and Tyla.
The entertainment programme extends beyond the opening week. Shakira is also scheduled to headline the halftime show during the FIFA World Cup final on July 19 at New York-New Jersey Stadium, with Madonna and BTS expected to join the performance. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is curating the final’s halftime show, which will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund to expand access to education and football opportunities for children worldwide.
The 2026 edition, jointly hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States, is the first World Cup to be staged across three countries, underlining the scale and cross-border collaboration of the tournament.
