Raha, June 11, 2026 — Fear has gripped villages near the Kamakhya Reserve Forest in Assam’s Kaliabor co-district after two Royal Bengal tigers were seen close to human settlements, prompting the administration to impose movement restrictions in several vulnerable areas. The prohibitory order was issued on Wednesday, June 10, by Kaliabor Co-district Commissioner Raj Baruah as a precautionary measure following repeated sightings.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), bars public movement between 2 pm and 9 am in zones stretching from Silghat Kamakhya Temple to Kamakhya Gaon and Sonari Gaon. The restrictions also cover parts of the No. 2 garden of Kaliabor Tea Estate, Naga Pathar, and the newly constructed Public Works Department road linking Trishuldhari Temple Road and Silghat Jute Mill.
Officials said the measures aim to minimise the risk of human-wildlife conflict after the big cats were repeatedly reported near inhabited areas. Forest department teams have been deployed to monitor the animals, which are believed to have strayed from the Kamakhya Reserve Forest into nearby localities.
A forest official stationed at the site said, “Whatever duty is required, we are carrying it out to ensure that the animals do not enter local residential areas. We request people not to use this road unless absolutely necessary and urge them to remain vigilant.” The order exempts government officials on official duty from the restrictions.
District Information and Public Relations Officer Bikash Sarma said the prohibitory order will remain in force until further directions from the administration. Authorities warned that violations could attract legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Anxiety among residents has risen after one of the tigers allegedly killed and fed on a cow on Wednesday, June 10. “The tiger took my cow yesterday (June 10). They had been seen here earlier as well, then disappeared for a month or two. Now they have returned again,” a local resident said.
Officials have urged people to avoid the restricted zones, stay alert, and immediately inform forest authorities if the tigers are sighted. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife interactions in communities bordering forest habitats, where authorities must balance public safety with animal protection.
