Police in Sreebhumi arrested 29 people-including four prison employees-after uncovering an internal supply network at Sreebhumi Central Jail that allegedly provided inmates with sharp weapons, mobile phones, cigarettes and bottles of alcohol in exchange for money. The arrests follow an investigation that began after district police superintendent Leena Doley received a tip in February about prisoners using mobile phones inside the facility.
Among those detained are prison staff identified as Assistant Jail Superintendent Rudra Deuri, Assistant Jail Superintendent Bishwajit Barua, Head Warder Musahid Ali Laskar and Warder Shubhashish Ghosh. The remaining 25 arrested are inmates, detained on the direction of the district police superintendent. The operation was carried out by Sreebhumi police, officials said.
After nearly five months of inquiry, investigators recovered 29 mobile phones along with sharp weapons and other contraband items from the detainees. Police say the evidence points to a systematic scheme in which staff accepted payments to smuggle prohibited items into the jail and supply them to prisoners.
Authorities have presented the case as part of a wider probe into corruption and illicit activity within the prison. No charges or court dates were disclosed in the report provided with the arrests. Local law enforcement has indicated the investigation into the full extent of the network and any additional accomplices remains ongoing.
This report was filed by Gopi Pal and Sagnik Choudhury.
