Meghalaya Border Standoff: Bangladesh Refuses Man Pushed Back by BSF
Tensions have flared along the Indo‑Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills after a man detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) and pushed back into Bangladesh was reportedly refused entry by authorities and residents there, leaving him stranded near the border fencing. The incident was reported from the Nandir Char sector near Mahendraganj and has prompted heightened security monitoring in the area.
According to sources, BSF personnel detained the man on suspicion of illegally entering Indian territory from Bangladesh. He was then returned across the international boundary as part of a pushback exercise — the practice of sending suspected cross‑border entrants back to the other side of the border.
Sources said that after the man crossed into Bangladeshi territory, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel and local residents declined to accept him, leaving him stranded in the zone beyond the fence. The refusal has reportedly increased tensions in the sector as security forces on both sides watch the situation closely.
Those familiar with the matter told reporters the individual had admitted to being a Bangladeshi national; despite that admission, Bangladeshi authorities and residents reportedly refused to take custody, creating uncertainty over his status and next steps.
Several videos purporting to show increased activity along the border have circulated on social media, but their authenticity and the claims attached to them could not be independently verified. At the time of filing this report, neither the BSF nor the BGB had issued an official statement.
The episode comes amid ongoing bilateral efforts to curb illegal cross‑border movement and to streamline repatriation procedures along the India‑Bangladesh border.
