5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Assam; Tremors Felt Across Northeast
A magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck in Bhutan on Sunday night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, at 11:10 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST), sending tremors across Assam and parts of northeast India and jolting residents in Guwahati. Authorities reported no immediate information on casualties or major structural damage.
The tremor prompted brief panic in several areas of Guwahati, where people left homes and buildings and gathered outdoors until the shaking subsided. Local residents in multiple neighbourhoods described noticeable shaking, and similar accounts came from other districts across Assam and the wider northeast region.
Tremors were also reported in neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal and China, according to the initial USGS notice and local reports. Emergency services in Assam said they were monitoring the situation and assessing any potential impacts.
A magnitude of 5.6 is generally classified as moderate; it can be strongly felt at the epicentre and cause minor to moderate damage in vulnerable structures, though larger damage is more likely with higher magnitudes or shallower quakes. At present, officials have not issued warnings of aftershocks or changed alert levels publicly.
Residents are advised to follow local official guidance, check for any structural damage to buildings, avoid using elevators until inspections are complete, and report emergencies to local authorities. Further updates will depend on assessments by state and national agencies and any additional bulletins from seismic monitoring services.
