Mild Quake Jolts Shillong: Tremor Sparks Concern Among Residents
A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Punakha, Bhutan at 11:06 pm on Sunday, June 7, sending strong tremors across Guwahati, Shillong and other parts of Northeast India and causing buildings in the region to sway for several seconds. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the quake originated at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres.
Residents in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Shillong and parts of Arunachal Pradesh reported feeling the sudden jolt; many left buildings and rushed into open spaces amid panic. Local officials say there have been no immediate reports of injuries or major infrastructure damage in Guwahati, Shillong or elsewhere in the Northeast so far, and teams are carrying out assessments.
Geological experts warn that mild aftershocks are common after shallow earthquakes in the Himalayan seismic belt and have urged residents to remain cautious while authorities complete damage and safety checks. Local administrations continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to follow official guidance.
