Nagaland Governor Calls for Bold Connectivity and Investment at NEC
Reported by Bhadra Gogoi
Dimapur — Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Thursday urged stronger regional cooperation, better connectivity and increased investment in infrastructure, youth empowerment and sustainable development across the Northeast while addressing the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong. He said such measures are essential to accelerate economic growth and regional integration and reaffirmed Nagaland’s commitment to building a prosperous, sustainable and inclusive Northeast in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and Viksit Nagaland.
Yadav stressed that improved transport and communications links remain a priority. He called for fast-tracking the proposed Ciethu airport and developing additional airstrips at Mokokchung, Tuensang and Mon, and urged progress on the Foothill Road and planned railway connectivity projects, arguing these would unlock the state’s industrial, mineral and agricultural potential.
Describing agriculture as the backbone of Nagaland’s economy, the governor noted that more than 70% of the population lives in rural areas and depends on farming for their livelihoods. He emphasised the need to strengthen value chains, certification systems and market access for the state’s organic products — including pineapple, cucumber, persimmon, Naga King chilli, coffee and agarwood — and advocated blending modern technology with traditional agricultural practices to raise productivity and incomes.
Yadav expressed concern over the absence of premier higher-education institutions in Nagaland, which forces many students to seek education outside the state. He urged consideration for establishing national or regional institutions locally and highlighted entrepreneurship, innovation and skill development as vital pathways for the state’s large youth population.
Calling for a stronger NEC, Yadav recommended enhanced powers, increased funding and equitable resource distribution among all eight northeastern states to bridge development gaps and accelerate regional progress. He said coordinated regional action and targeted investments are crucial to realise long-term, inclusive development for Nagaland and the wider Northeast.
