Meghalaya’s Future: Conrad K Sangma Urges Early Childhood Development
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on June 1 inaugurated the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Implementation Science Workshop in Shillong, bringing together experts, policymakers and development partners to explore ways of strengthening support systems for children and families across the state. The two-day forum aims to shape evidence-based approaches and implementation practices to improve early childhood services and outcomes in Meghalaya.
Emphasising a collaborative approach, Sangma said early childhood development cannot be handled by a single department and must involve health, nutrition, education, caregiving and economic empowerment sectors working together. “Early childhood development is not one department’s responsibility,” he said, urging coordinated action across government and partner agencies.
Sangma stressed that progress should be judged by tangible improvements in people’s lives rather than policy documents alone. “Development is not just policies, but about ensuring every child gets the right start, every mother feels supported, and every family has hope for a better future,” he said, linking policy to measurable benefits at household and community levels.
He argued that stronger intersectoral coordination and a focus on measurable outcomes would deliver long-term gains for community well‑being. Sangma highlighted that investments in the early years yield lasting benefits for health, education and future economic opportunities.
Organisers expect the workshop to generate practical recommendations and implementation pathways based on current evidence, with participants sharing strategies to scale effective early childhood interventions across Meghalaya.
Reiterating the state government’s commitment to child development, Sangma said investing in children today is an investment in “a stronger, healthier, and more hopeful tomorrow for Meghalaya.”
