Mizoram’s influential student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), has accused Chief Minister Lalduhoma of favouritism and of misleading the organisation over the re‑employment of retired senior official R Lalrodingi, and has announced a protest at the state secretariat. The dispute centres on Lalrodingi’s reappointment first approved by the government on April 24 and made effective from May 1, shortly after she retired as Additional Director of the Commerce & Industries and Geology & Mining departments on April 30.
The April 24 order appointed Lalrodingi as Director of Tourism and also named her Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister; an OSD is generally understood as a political appointment. After objections from the MZP, the government on May 15 partly rolled back the order and said Lalrodingi would serve only as OSD. The government then reversed that rollback on May 22, directing that she would additionally hold charge as Director of Tourism with immediate effect.
MZP president C Lalremruata expressed strong disappointment, saying the Chief Minister had assured the organisation during a May 13 meeting — including in writing, he claimed — that the re‑employment decision would be reviewed. “The position of OSD to the Chief Minister is a political appointment and we have no objection to that. But we clearly stated that we would not accept her re‑appointment as Director of Tourism,” Lalremruata told reporters, adding that the organisation felt misled “inside his own office” and alleging favouritism at the highest level.
The MZP reiterated its long‑standing opposition to re‑employing retired government employees, arguing such appointments impede promotion prospects for serving officers and block employment opportunities for educated youth. Following an internal meeting on the evening of May 23, the MZP announced it will stage a picketing protest at the Tourism Department office in the Mizoram Secretariat on May 25 against the government’s decision.
