Manipur Youth Congress Demands Immediate Release of Detained Leaders
The Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has demanded the unconditional release of its office bearers who were detained by police during a protest held in front of the Chief Minister’s Bungalow on May 23. The demonstration, the party said, was organised to highlight the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Manipur.
Speaking at a press conference at Congress Bhavan on Friday evening, MPYC vice president Thingujam Kiran Singh said the Youth Congress staged the protest to draw attention to the prolonged crisis. He alleged that several office bearers, including the MPYC president, were taken into custody during the demonstration and had not been freed by evening. “The concerned authorities should release them immediately without any condition,” Singh said.
Singh said Manipur has faced conflict for nearly three years, resulting in deaths, displacement and disappearances of many innocent people. He accused the authorities of failing to find a lasting solution despite the presence of a “double‑engine government.” “Innocent people continue to die,” he said, and added that many cases linked to the crisis have been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) but have not produced visible arrests.
The MPYC also alleged that the government has prioritised election‑related activities over restoring peace. The party said public anger over the handling of the Manipur crisis prompted Friday’s protest and reiterated its demand that detained members be released unconditionally at the earliest.
