Mizoram Govt Employees Declare Mass Leave on June 8 Over OPS Demand
Government employees in Mizoram covered by the National Pension System (NPS) will observe a mass casual leave on June 8 to press for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the Mizoram Movement for Old Pension Scheme (MIMOPS) announced on Thursday in Aizawl. The action is intended to escalate pressure on the state government after what the group described as insufficient progress on long-standing demands.
The decision to call the mass leave was taken at a MIMOPS meeting held on Wednesday, a leader of the organisation said. According to the group’s statement, employees are being pushed to intensify their protest despite reluctance among many to confront authorities directly.
MIMOPS said the state government had “failed to make any encouraging progress” on the matter, prompting the planned collective leave. The organisation appealed to its members for unity and full participation in the agitation, warning that a lack of solidarity would weaken the campaign’s prospects.
“We urgently need solidarity from all members. If full support is not received now, it may become increasingly difficult to continue the movement effectively,” the organisation said, urging workers across the state to back the June 8 action.
The body also criticised the state government for not implementing the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), noting that the Central Government rolled out the UPS from April 1 last year. MIMOPS pointed out that several other states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Tripura and Manipur, have already extended UPS to employees despite not forming study committees on the issue.
The announcement did not include a response from the Mizoram government. MIMOPS has framed the mass casual leave as a crucial step to force negotiations and restore pension security for employees currently under NPS.
