Mumbai Anti-Encroachment Drive Turns Violent: 10 Charged, Cops Injured
Tension erupted in Mumbai’s Bandra East on Wednesday, May 20, after an anti-encroachment demolition drive in Garib Nagar near Bandra East railway station allegedly turned violent, leading to clashes, stone-pelting and injuries to several police personnel, officials said. The Mumbai Police registered an FIR at Nirmal Nagar Police Station naming 10 identified accused and several others under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the FIR, the operation to remove illegal encroachments and unauthorised structures was carried out pursuant to court orders and official directives. Personnel from the Mumbai Police, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Home Guards and other departments were deployed to maintain law and order during the scheduled anti-encroachment action.
Police said a crowd of about 100–150 people gathered during the demolition and began protesting. Repeated announcements were reportedly made asking the crowd to disperse and cooperate with authorities. The FIR alleges the situation escalated when some members of the gathering became aggressive and attempted to obstruct the demolition operation.
The complaint further alleges that protesters raised slogans, created unrest and hurled stones and other objects at police and officials, resulting in heightened tension at the site. Following the disruption, police say they used mild force to regain control and detained several individuals at the scene.
Officials reported that multiple police and security personnel sustained injuries and were provided medical treatment. The FIR invokes charges including unlawful assembly, rioting, obstructing public servants from performing official duties, assault on public servants and damage to public property against those named.
An investigation is underway; authorities are examining CCTV footage and collecting additional evidence to identify others allegedly involved in the violence and stone-pelting. Security deployment in the Bandra East area has been intensified to prevent further incidents.
