Mumbai, May 17 — The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Central Railway said on Sunday that its personnel rescued and reunited 584 vulnerable children and adults with their families and saved 25 passengers from life‑threatening accidents across railway premises between January and April 2026. The interventions were carried out under three humanitarian drives: Operation Nanhe Farishte, Operation Dignity and Operation Jeevan Raksha.
Under Operation Nanhe Farishte, a nationwide effort to locate and protect vulnerable children on railway premises, the RPF rescued 499 children during the four‑month period — 331 boys and 168 girls. Officials said the group included runaways, missing minors, destitute children and those needing immediate care. Rescued children were either reunited with family members or handed over to Child Welfare Committees and NGOs for rehabilitation and protection.
In Operation Dignity, RPF teams assisted 85 vulnerable adults found in distress at stations and on railway property, comprising 38 men and 47 women. The operation focuses on identifying destitute, abandoned or mentally unwell individuals and ensuring they receive timely medical aid, shelter and rehabilitation support.
Operation Jeevan Raksha saw RPF personnel intervene to prevent fatal incidents while passengers were boarding or alighting from moving trains, saving 25 lives — 20 male and five female passengers. Central Railway officials credited the outcomes to the alertness and swift response of RPF staff deployed at stations.
“The vigilance, dedication and humanitarian efforts of RPF personnel in rescuing children, helping vulnerable adults and saving lives demonstrate their unwavering commitment towards passenger safety and public welfare,” Central Railway said in a statement, noting that the force now functions as a compassionate arm of Indian Railways as well as a security provider.
Authorities appealed to travellers not to board or alight from moving trains, to remain watchful of their belongings, and to immediately inform RPF or railway staff if they spot any lost, distressed, destitute or mentally unwell child or adult. The Railway Helpline number 139 was provided for assistance in such cases.
