Assam storm batters Kokrajhar: Heavy rain, infrastructure, traffic hit
Heavy storm and heavy rain lashed Kokrajhar district on Sunday, May 17, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and disrupting daily life across parts of the town. Strong winds and intense downpours battered Kokrajhar town, leaving several public facilities and roads damaged and impassable.
According to reports, the storm caused significant damage to a power house in Kokrajhar town. The wireless tower at the Sadar Police Station also collapsed during the event, raising immediate concerns about local communication and service coordination.
Multiple trees were uprooted across the town as a result of the severe weather. Fallen trees blocked major thoroughfares, including DC Office Road, Thana Road and JD Road, interrupting traffic and complicating movement for residents and emergency services.
Vehicular movement on affected stretches remained disrupted for several hours while crews and local personnel worked to clear large trees and debris. Commuters and motorists experienced delays as key routes were temporarily closed or reduced to single lanes.
District officials said the administration and concerned departments have been actively engaged in clearing debris, removing fallen trees and restoring traffic flow and essential services. Restoration efforts are ongoing in the most affected areas, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Residents have been advised to follow official updates and exercise caution while travelling until roads are fully cleared and services are restored.
