CNG prices in Delhi rose for the second time within two days, increasing by Rs 1 per kilogram from Sunday across the capital and its adjoining areas, bringing the city’s CNG rate to Rs 80.09 per kg. Authorities said petrol and diesel rates did not change during this latest revision.
The move follows an earlier nationwide hike in petrol and diesel last Friday when Delhi’s CNG price was raised by Rs 2 per kg. With this latest adjustment coming just two days later, commuters and fleet operators face another immediate increase in fuel costs even though liquid fuel prices remained static over the same interval.
Regional CNG rates now vary widely: Noida and Ghaziabad are charging Rs 88.70 per kg, Gurugram Rs 85.12 per kg, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Shamli Rs 88.58 per kg, Kanpur Rs 91.42 per kg and Ajmer Rs 89.44 per kg. Industry observers warn that such hikes in CNG will ripple through the economy because a large portion of Delhi’s public transport runs on CNG.
Experts quoted in the report linked the increases to global energy tensions. They said fears of rising fuel prices emerged after the Middle East conflict that began earlier this year and intensified following a clash on February 28 between Iran and the United States, which has contributed to a worldwide fuel supply squeeze. Several countries have already raised petrol, diesel and gas prices, and India is beginning to feel the impact, analysts said.
Because public buses, taxis and many commercial vehicles in and around Delhi rely heavily on CNG, the specialists warned the price rise is likely to push up transport fares and, in turn, the cost of everyday goods that depend on road transport.
