CNG Price Surge in Delhi: Second Hike in Two Days — Alert
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will become costlier across Delhi and nearby regions from 6 a.m. on 17 May 2026 after Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) raised retail CNG rates by Rs 1 per kilogram in all its gas areas, the second increase in two days. The company said the move is intended to marginally offset higher input gas costs and the steep appreciation of the US dollar amid disruptions to global energy markets linked to the extended closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Middle East conflict.
Under the revision, CNG in Delhi is now priced at Rs 80.09 per kg. Rates in other cities include Rs 88.70 per kg in Noida and Ghaziabad, Rs 85.12 in Gurugram, Rs 88.58 in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Shamli, Rs 91.42 in Kanpur, Rs 89.44 in Ajmer, Rs 86.42 in Banda and Rs 89.70 in Hapur.
In a statement, IGL said: “The retail selling price of CNG has been increased by Rs 1/kg wef 6 am on 17.05.2026 in all GAs of IGL. The revision in retail prices of CNG has been effected only to marginally offset the impact of increase in input gas cost along with steep appreciation of USD. Even after revision, CNG would still offer upto 45% savings towards the running cost when compared to vehicles running on alternate fuel at the current level of prices.”
The latest hike follows a Rs 2 increase imposed in Delhi a few days earlier, which took prices from Rs 77.09 to Rs 79.09 per kg, and comes after a similar rise in Mumbai where CNG now costs about Rs 84 per kg. Petrol and diesel prices were also raised by roughly Rs 3 since the previous Friday, marking the first increases in four years as crude and gas prices spike amid geopolitical tensions.
Analysts and officials link the price moves to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a chokepoint that handles about one-fifth of global oil flows — which has tightened supplies and pushed up global energy costs. The adjustments feed into retail inflation and are likely to ripple through public transport fares; autorickshaw unions in Mumbai have already sought a Re 1 increase to the Rs 26 base fare.
State-run oil marketing companies including IOC, BPCL and HPCL have reported mounting losses, estimated at around Rs 1,600 crore daily, from buying crude at higher prices while domestic retail rates remained constrained. Government sources say authorities have so far avoided larger hikes to keep inflation in check. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to conserve fuel and consider remote work to curb demand, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced two work-from-home days weekly for government offices.
