A high-level delegation from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, May 15, at Koinadhara in Guwahati to discuss a proposed IFAD-funded project aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening rural livelihoods across the state. The delegation was led by Donal F. Brown, Associate Vice‑President, Department of Country Operations, IFAD.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, discussions focused on an IFAD-supported development initiative targeting the rural economy in Assam. “The discussions centred on a proposed IFAD-funded project aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and strengthening rural livelihoods across Assam,” the CMO said in a statement.
Officials said the proposed project is expected to support farmers, improve agricultural output, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities in rural areas. While specifics on funding size, project phases and timelines were not disclosed, authorities described the initiative as intended to complement existing state efforts to raise farm incomes and expand market linkages.
IFAD, an international financial institution and a specialised agency of the United Nations, works to reduce rural poverty, improve food security and promote sustainable agricultural development in developing countries. State and IFAD representatives said further consultations will follow to finalise project design and implementation arrangements.
The meeting underlines growing attention to rural development in Assam, where agricultural productivity and livelihood resilience remain central to the state’s economy and food security.
