IFAD Meets Assam CM: Transformative Rural Project for Northeast
A high-level delegation from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 15, 2026, at Koinadhara to discuss a proposed initiative aimed at improving rural livelihoods and boosting agricultural development across the state. The talks focused on a prospective IFAD-funded project designed to raise farm productivity and strengthen income sources for rural communities.
The delegation was led by Donal F. Brown, Associate Vice‑President of IFAD’s Department of Country Operations. The Chief Minister’s Office posted on X that a delegation “called upon HCM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today at Koinadhara.” The CMO added that “the discussions centred on a proposed IFAD‑funded project aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and strengthening rural livelihoods across Assam.”
IFAD, a specialised United Nations agency, works to reduce poverty and food insecurity in developing countries through agriculture‑based interventions and rural transformation programmes. Officials said the meeting reflects Assam’s continued effort to explore international cooperation to modernise its agriculture sector and improve living standards in rural areas.
While no financing or implementation details were released, the discussions signal an interest on both sides to pursue collaboration that could bring technical assistance, investment and programmes targeting smallholders and rural households. Officials indicated talks will continue as the parties assess how an IFAD partnership might be structured for Assam.
